THE GENIUS OF JESUS
[PART II]

7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. 9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

JOHN 8:7-9
King James Version

In part 2 of this sermon series, we see the Genius of Jesus in His omniscience when he convicts mankind’s conscience.

• 9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience,

There was questioning done by the Pharisees and scribes that was directed at Jesus regarding the woman who was caught in the act of adultery. It was when Jesus responded to their questioning with a statement that said, “….he that is without sin…cast the first stone…” The Pharisees and scribes did not respond in word but in actions as they walked away because their conscience convicted them.

What is interesting about the word conscience is that it is two words in one. The prefix “con” refers to with and “science” refers to knowledge of. So, the GENIUS OF JESUS was not to answer their question that would entrap Him but educated them about their own sins. Their conscience being convicted revealed a familiarity with the sin of adultery that they too may have been participatory in.

When we look at the Genius of Jesus, what was meant to be a trap door for Him resulted in an open door of invitation to this adulterous woman to change her life from one of sin to salvation. The Pharisees and scribes were quick to learn that the ditch you dig for someone else may be the ditch you fall into yourself.
